Knut Bjørn Stokke is attached to the Department of Housing and Environmental Planning Research, and the priority areas Governance and Comparative Territorial Research in Europe and OECD Area.
My main research interests include coastal planning and local and regional river basin management, where identifying and analysing factors affecting integrated management are central issues. Balancing sometimes competing interests is one important element of coastal planning and river basin planning. Of particular interest in my research are coastal fisheries and aquaculture, outdoor recreation, conservation of natural resources, biological diversity and cultural monuments. My theoretical approaches derive mainly from recent planning theory and governance. At the moment I am heading the Outdoor Recreation and Land-use Management project, a part of the strategic institute programme Outdoor Life is Changing, where we look at planning and management of coastal areas, woodland and green corridors in peri-urban environments. I am also involved in the institute programmes Cultural Monuments and Cultural Environments and Integrated Coastal Management and Management of Large Drainage Basins. As of 2007, I have been involved in a comprehensive project on how coastal and urban communities are adapting to climate change, as the risk of flooding, avalanches etc. increases.
