Applied research promoting an integrated approach to place and economic development underlies the various place research projects in which NIBR is involved on this research front. These studies explore issues related to local place identity, reputation and image as well. Efforts are directed at developing methodologies and refining analytical tools.

Governance

Generally referred to as a movement from government to governance, there is a growing need for studies of changing forms of social governance and coordination. The study of governance involves several areas of the social sciences, including legitimacy, democratic participation, social efficiency and political control.

Comparative territorial research in the European/OECD area

The purpose is to promote studies of territorial and developmental patterns in Europe and the OECD area, while securing a lead position for NIBR in comparative territorial research. The rate of globalisation, integration in Europe and, not least, EU expansion in Eastern and Central Europe, makes it even more urgent to study European processes of change and Norway's role in Europe.
