Jon Guttu trained as an architect at Norwegian Institute of Technology (1968), and obtained a PhD from the Oslo School of Architecture (2003). He has worked primarily in the area of physical housing research, first at Norwegian Building Research Institute, and from 1992 at NIBR. His work has included floor plan studies of flats to qualities in the built environment and urban setting. His starting point has been the needs and behaviour of users, and research method has often comprised interviews and technical analysis. Jon Guttu was also involved with the comprehensive research project Nature and Environmentally Friendly Small Town Development, from around 1990, and has later studied the impact of high density housing in smaller and larger towns along with urban development in a sustainable perspective. In his PhD work, “The Good Dwelling”, Jon Guttu described and analysed how technical discussions among housing planners changed from the Fifties to the end of the millennium. The intimate knowledge of the history Norwegian housing resulting from this work has made Jon Guttu a highly sought-after lecture.
