Marit Ekne Ruud studied ethnology at the University of Oslo, gaining her Master’s degree in 1987 and PhD in 2003. She works in the Department of Housing and Environmental Planning Research. Before coming to NIBR she worked in the Housing Research Department at the Norwegian Building Research Institute (today SINTEF Building and Infrastructure), and was a research fellow at the University of Oslo. Her area of work at NIBR is largely concerned with housing quality and housing preferences, urban development and place studies. Among other projects she headed Expanding Jessheim – Youth, Meeting Places and Urban Development, co-authored the guide Socio-cultural Place Analysis, and the feasibility project for the Groruddalen urban renewal scheme, Timely Intervention. She has co-authored Byen som symbolsk rom [The City as Symbolic Space]. Marit Ekne Ruud is currently working on project exploring Critical Urban Areas in Portugal, and place analyses in connection with the Groruddalen scheme. She is a team member of projects on residents’ experiences of housing standards in new homes. She has lectured at the university and colleges on subjects such as cities and residential environments.
