Olaf Foss is a sociologist, Research Director and head of the Division for Socio-Economic and Territorial Studies. He has been editor of NIBR’s biannual journal Regionale trender since 1988. Foss has been active in regional research since the early 1970s and his publications count more than a hundred, covering issues like regional demography and migration, employment and the labour market, industrial development and firm localization, territorial impact assessment. In the period 1985-1990 he was coordinator of the programme Research for Regional Development (Research Council for Applied Social Research). In the period 1998-2002 he was research manager of the programme Regional development (Regut) in the Norwegian Research Council. He acted as national contact point (ECP) for the European Spatial Planning Observation Network 2003-2007 and contributed to several transnational research projects and networking activities within this programme. Since 1992 he has contributed continuously to OECD’s activity on territorial indicators and analysis. He has also been involved in international activities on EIA (UN/ECE) and research projects in countries outside the Nordic countroes and Europe.
